Welcome to Poros and the Saga Hotel...
Poros is a beautiful island an hour from Athens, the Saga Hotel being one of its most notable hotels. Zefi and Takis
Alexopoulos are an enterprising and warm-hearted couple who have succeeded in creating a modern hotel in which the guests
feel part of the family. The food served at the hotel includes organic produce from their own farm on the mainland,
whilst in Athens itself they have apartments where visitors can stay to visit the classic treasures such as the Acropolis
and the Parthenon. Part of the fun is the informality of the Saga Hotel; first-name terms are the rule and one can relax
amongst friends. Poros is a part of Greece that is kind to visitors, less sophisticated and gentler than the rule in Athens and the better-known islands. You can go shopping in Poros or Galatas, or take a cheap ferry-trip
further afield to Aegina, or simply walk about the island, laze on the beaches and choose a different taverna every night. |

The Island of Love...
Just offshore from Poros is the tiny and perfect heart-shaped island of Daskalio, traditionally the birthplace of Eros,
the God of Love. This is just one feature - Love Bay being another - that sets the ambience for marriages and honeymoons
on this idyllic island in the Aegean. For the visitor who wants sun, there is plenty of that - the hotel roof is a private
sun terrace with a bar - whilst across on the Peloponnese there is a rich feast of history with historic sites at Mycenae,
Epidaurus and Troizinia. The sea is all about you - the island was the home of Poseidon - but on the land there are shady
trees and glorious flowers. On the mainland at Trizina are extensive fruit orchards and flower gardens, for this is the area
that produces the flowers Greeks now throw about at celebrations. |

Spring & Autumn Breaks ...
Poros has incredible natural beauty, particularly during the flowers of spring and the colours and fruits of autumn.
The writer and his wife spent an incredible week at the Saga Hotel at the start of June 2006. The weather was warm and dry,
the sun strong but not excessive and the town and islands were pleasantly free of crowds. The other advantages were bags of
room in the Tavernas and a lot of beaches with few visitors. The value for money was remarkable and the only drawback was that the
ferries and guided tours were fewer. A second visit in September 2007 confirmed the enjoyment experienced in the June visit
and showed that Poros is perfect for visiting some of the most famous historic sites of Greece - the Acropolis at Athens,
the Theatre at Epidauros and the ancient Palace of Mycenae - as well as the surprising ancient and recent history of Poros and Trizina
See Poros 2006 for the June visit
that turned into a blog appraisal of Poros and Poros 2007
for the September visit to Greece's fascinating history. |
