Toghill, Betty. (Elizabeth, Liz)(maiden : White married : Frank Toghill, Edward Sparks, Francis Bate) : Joined 1940 or 1941 at Factory. Blending and Packing. Packed cordite for Archangel in Russia. Tubular (green, waxy) blue (felt chalky, white spots was discarded). Gadget strapped to the hand. About 35 = 36 trays per table for one box (lined with waxed paper). Also hair cordite. 3 shifts finished at 3pm, midnight 6:50. Re-work job breaking up blue cordite. 18th birthday. German planes overhead. Lived at Castle Douglas. Grenadier Guards' train stopped for them near Southwick - friend Margaret's boyfriend Charlie. Officer 'Good gracious, most unusual, what ?' 3 mile walk back to Factory beside line. | |
