The extensive grounds of Balmaghie House offer many opportunities for guests. A childrens' playground, picnic tables and nature trails, are just a few of the possibilities on offer.

Balmaghie House is well-sited to take advantage of the tourist attractions around Loch Ken. Nearby Laurieston Forest has just one of several forest walks in this area. Loch Ken itself, - with its remarkable hydro-electric scheme, - offers scope for bird-watchers, fishermen, and water sports. The Galloway Sailing Centre is just 10 miles north on the A713, and offers a wide range of water sports and boating activities.

An excellent Forest Drive - the 'Raider's Road' - runs from Mossdale on the A762 up to the Queen's Way near Clatteringshaws Dam. The stone and pools at the Otter Pool halfway along the Raider's Road offers an excellent picnic facility for all ages. The Queen's Way on the A712 from New Galloway to Newton Stewart has a Deer Museum, the Goat Park and a Wild Deer Reserve. The birthplace and monument to the scholar Alexander Murray can also be visited, and the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall is rich in wild flowers. Walkers can enjoy the Southern Upland Way near St.John's Town of Dalry, as well as the various marked walks in the Galloway Forest Park.

Castle Douglas is just 7 miles to the south west. This town's most famous attraction is probably Threave Castle, built on an island by the Black Douglas Earl Archibald the Grim. The town also has Carlingwark Loch and the National Trust's Threave Gardens. Kirkcudbright, 14 miles to the south, is another attractive town, a small seaport with McLellan's Castle, two museums and a well-developed artists' colony.

How To Find Us

Balmaghie Mansion House is reached from the A713 Castle Douglas to Crossmichael road. At Townhead of Greenlaw, turn onto the B795 towards Laurieston, crossing the bridge at Glenlochar beside the hydro-electric barrage. Fork left and continue for a further mile and a half until you reach the lodge at the third entrance on the right-hand side of the road. Turn beside the lodge and continue up the driveway for about half a mile until you reach a left turn to the House itself.
