Annex : Community Action in a Crisis -
Holding a Public Meeting

Introduction :

Community action calls for community consent and the will to carry out a suitable course of action. You will have to :-

  • Assemble a committee to run the project - or get co-opted to advise the local parish, town or community council.
  • Hold a simple meeting to discuss the problem and achieve a decision - with official local authority support, or at least the agreement of the Emergency Services.
  • Inform local people by leaflet, notice or car-mounted speaker (public address) system.
  • Establish some kind of voluntary street or ward monitor or 'Warden' system, to feedback needs, offers of help and any complaints.
  • If the crisis is longer than a few days, consider weekly public meetings to discuss problems needing further public consent.
