Annex : Fire Plan

Surviving a Fire :

Fires kill people, destroy property and can occur as a result of many kinds of error and neglect. More rarely, it can occur by natural causes such as lightning or as a result of arson or war. However caused, the main problems are as follows. :-

  1. Smoke and Toxic Fumes : Produced by burning plastic, such as clothing, curtain and carpet fabric, foam rubber and plastic padding in furniture, electrical insulation, plastic kitchen utensils and children's toys. Kills by poisoning or smothering.
  2. Intense Heat : This can set anything inflammable on fire. It can burn through structural timbers and staircases, also cause concrete to crack and metal to soften or even melt. Twin hazards of fire and collapse. People can be burned to death or crushed by building collapse, but more often are killed first by smoke and fumes.
  3. Darkness from smoke : Unless you know a room well, there is a real hazard of becoming lost and being unable to find a door or window.
  4. Electrocution : Firemen have to be taught to move through smoke and reach out with the back of their hands. Wires whose insulation has been burnt off may hang down and may still be carrying electricity. If grasped, the current may make the hand 'lock' and result in electrocution.
More rarely, heathland fires can affect forests, scrubland, dry grassland or dry standing grain. Isolated housing
