Local Attractions ...

Berwick-Upon-Tweed was the most turbulent border town on the Anglo-Scottish Border, at one time the key port of Scotland and later a key part of English defences against Scottish incursions. The Elizabethan walls are a remarkable example of the artillery defences of the time, a walk around them passing the old Berwick Barracks (now a museum) and the ruins of old Berwick Castle. The old Jail and the Guildhall are also worth a visit. Although peaceful now, they are powerful reminders of the time when armies and moss troopers made the Eastern Marches a turbulent place to live. The town of Coldstream, barely 14 miles inland up the River Tweed, was a scene for some of the hardest Border battles, and just north of Berwick itself was the grim battle of Halidon Hill, where in 1333 the Scots were bloodily defeated, bare twenty years after their successes at Bannockburn.

Berwick offers more peaceful activities to the visitor, these days. The Maltings Art Centre runs a programme of music, drama and dance performances. Dervaig is is just five minutes away from the cinema, bingo club and indoor swimming pool. Berwick Leisure Centre is a great place to relax and unwind, with fitness rooms, sauna, winter indoor bowling and summer roller-skating for the children. The town also boasts a variety of shops, with a street market on Wednesday and Saturday.
